Let’s get right into it today.
Within your heart you can make plans for your future, but the Lord chooses the steps you take to get there.Proverbs 16:9 (TPT)
The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.Proverbs 16:9 (NASB)
This verse came with shiny bright lights today.
Let’s examine exactly what this verse is say, as well as discuss what it’s not saying. First, let’s take a road down what it’s not saying. I’ve heard this verse taught many times growing up, but I now realize that the lessons taught growing up with this verse is actually not what this verse is saying at all.
I’ve heard it talk in the context of “our plans are bad and His plans are good” or “we make plans but the Lord knows better”.
However, when we read this verse, nowhere does it say that we make plans and the Lord erases, deletes, or hates them. It does not say that the plans we make are subpar and must be scrapped. It does not read, you have plans, but don’t follow them because the Lord’s way are better.
Within your heart you can make plans for your future, but the Lord chooses the steps you take to get there.
What He is saying is, you make plans and I’ll show you exactly how to get there.
Do you see that?
Whoa scary right? That means that we have a responsibility to dream and make plans, but we also have a responsibility to seek Him to know how to get there.
What if my plan isn’t His will?
Before I continue I want to say that there is a much bigger teaching here that I cannot properly convey through a short blog post. That is why I’m writing a book.
Second, throughout this post, keep in mind that I am referring to those who are in Christ. I’m speaking specifically about those who are born again and have a new heart.
ok, now that I’ve got the disclaimers out of the way. Let’s discuss.
Psalm 37:4 says,
Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Again, a comprehensive teaching cannot be done here, so I’m going to try to summarize and simplify. If you have any questions, then I’d love to hear them. Leave a comment and we can discuss.
When Jesus is our Lord, we are surrendered to Him, and find delight/satisfaction in Him, then scripturally we understand that we are one with Him. Not only are we one with Him, we are seated in heavenly places with Jesus – at the right hand of the Father. We also know that He has removed our heart of stone and given us a heart of flesh. We know that He has giving us living water and there is streams of living water flowing from our heart.
With all of this, I propose that we make the plans we do because God placed them there. In relationships with Jesus and under His Lordship, He will place in us purposes and dreams that come straight from His heart. Sometimes we are born with those dreams, but something they come once we give our lives to Christ and develop a relationship with Him. Either way, He deposits them into our heart. Therefore, it is His will.
He’s not saying here to squash your plans because He has a better one. He’s saying, make the plans and I’ll help you get there – step by step.
It truly is a beautiful reflection of the relationship He wants with us. It demonstrates how He wants to partner with us. It shows how we are not robots simply following orders, but we are allowed to dream and when we dream in Him, He will help us accomplish those dreams.
If you were raised in a reformed theological church, think Calvin & Luther, then I’m sure there are tons of questions you may have. You may have had a lot of “but” statements while reading this blog because we’ve grown up being taught how evil and horrible we are.
Great News! We weren’t born dung and when Jesus came into the picture, we didn’t become snow covered dung.
We were born diamonds. This world may have dulled our diamond and covered it up, but when Jesus came into the picture, He cleans us up and removes what the junk. He doesn’t cover the junk. He removes it. Now that is Good News!
Think about what I’ve shared. Read it. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the truth. It’s possible I’m wrong, BUT what if I’m not? Think about the implications. Wouldn’t the world be brighter and the possibilities seem endless?
Jesus, you bring the dead to life. You transform the heart of stone to a heart of flesh. You made a way where there was no way. You brought hope to humanity. Then, you left us Your Spirit to abide in us, making it possible to be empowered and have a relationship with you. Your Spirit lives and breathes in us making it possible for us to have a relationship with the Father, and just as you saw the Father doing things and heard Him saying things, we too can do that through your Spirit.
I thank you for the Good News of the Gospel! I personally think it’s better than good. It’s great! May you encourage all those who read this with the confirmation that you have placed the dream in their heart. The plans they have been praying about and seeking guidance on, may this be the confirmation they need to know that you are all in it. Now, all they have to do is allow you to partner with them so You can get them there.
May you lead the way and bring it to pass so that your purposes may be accomplished. Our dreams and our plans when we are in You accomplish Your purposes. How do I know this? Because you said that if we delight in You, You will fulfill the desires of our hearts…you wouldn’t do that if it didn’t fit within Your purpose. You are a good God. You are beautiful and awesome. You are wise and amazing. YOU ARE LOVE!
